Push Carts for Women

Parbati Sarki is 57 years old. In the past, she used to earn a living by selling fruits and vegetables. She has been abandoned by her husband, and recently has been evicted by her own sons and daughter in laws. Having nowhere to go, she is temporarily staying in her niece’s house. She says if she can get a pulling cart, she can again start to earn for herself.

Hem Lata Puri Jirel is working as a maid in two houses. She is 29 years old, her husband Anil Puri is working occasionally as a construction labourer. They have one daughter. She would like to earn a bit more by selling vegetables and other goods but renting a push cart is expensive.

Nani Maiya Tamang is 39 years old. She earns a small income by selling roasted maize cobs using a rented pulling cart. With the little money she earns, she is taking care of her two young sons. Nani Maiya tells that her husband is drunk most of the time and does nothing for their livelihood.

These are some of the women that Inner Wheel Balaju wants to help by providing a simple pull cart. When these women no longer have to rent a cart (and pay part of their income to the cart owner), they will be better able to provide a bit better live for their families.

Inner Wheel is one of the largest women international volunteer organisations and was founded in 1924. Inner wheel Balaju was formed in 2012 and is providing support to the differently abled & deprived groups of the local Kathmandu community.

Jhigu Palaa is proud to support this initiative by donating $1100 to Inner Wheel Balaju for the purchase of three push cards for these women. This donation enables these women to sell vegetables and other products, which will help them earn a living and make a difference in their lives.
