About Us

Jhigu Palaa aims to improve the longer term living conditions of the people affected by the earthquakes in Nepal.

Jhigu Palaa was created in response to the two devastating earthquakes that hit Nepal in 2015. In the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes, Jhigu Palaa started collecting donations and contacted a local non-profit organization in Nepal that works with small communities. With the help of the donations of so many generous friends and relatives, we were able to build ten temporary shelters for people in the village of Panga.

Jhigu Palaa is supporting income generating activities for groups of women that have lost their work and sources of income as a result of the earthquakes. These people have lost their homes and their jobs in the earthquakes. The women have ideas and courage, but lack the funds and commercial banks will not provide them credit.  This is where Jhigu Palaa can help.

Till now, we have been able to support income generating projects and skills training of women in Pangaa and Lubhu villages, and funded phase one of the Shree Bageshwori Primary School reconstruction project in Chapagaon. Jhigu Palaa supported a group of women in starting their tailoring business, and another group of women in creating a village store to sell their produce. We established a small grant and credit program to help women start their small businesses. Till now, Jhigu Palaa has contributed over $ 16,000 to help communities in the affected areas.

Our organization is run entirely by volunteers, and we raise money by selling calendars and cards, organizing cultural events, workshops, bottle drives, and so on. Together with our US partner organization Mitra Path and small non-profit organizations in Nepal we want to continue to help these people generate income and slowly rebuild their community. There is hope for Nepal, but there is so much more to do.

The Jhigu Palaa Society is a non profit organization incorporated under the British Columbia Societies Act and is based in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada
